Ingredients

The base

  • 4 cups Water (or low sodium chicken broth)
  • 2 cups Heavy Cream (or half and half) plus more if needed
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • teaspoons Kosher Salt (or 1 teaspoon table salt) or to taste
  • 2 cups Stone Ground Grits, yellow or white (or other Long Cooking Grits) uncooked

The cheese

  • 2 cups Sharp Cheddar Cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. Add the water, heavy cream, butter, and salt to the slow cooker and stir.
  2. Add the grits and stir well.
  3. Cover and cook on High for 3-4 hours, stirring once after 1.5 hours and again at 2.5 hours.
  4. Check for doneness and add more cream or milk if the mixture is too thick.
  5. About 10 minutes before serving, stir in the shredded cheese and adjust the salt if needed.
  6. Serve hot.
