Caramel Apple Crisp Bars

The filling

peeled diced firm apples (such as Granny Smith)

homemade or store-bought caramel sauce
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and line an 8-inch x 8-inch baking dish with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, mix the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, oats, brown sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, allspice, and nutmeg.
- Add the butter in small pieces and work it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the caramel sauce and reserved flour.
- Press 2/3 of the crumb mixture into the prepared baking dish, then layer the sliced apples on top.
- Pour the caramel sauce over the apples and sprinkle with the remaining crumb mixture.
- Bake for 30 to 40 minutes until the top is lightly browned, then let cool before slicing into bars.
