Ingredients

The dough

  • 1 cup 2% milk
  • 2 tablespoons maple sugar
  • 1 packet quick rise yeast
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt

The filling

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ½ cup maple sugar
  • ¼ cup light brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

The maple cream cheese frosting

  • 2 ounces cream cheese
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the yeast by mixing warm milk, maple sugar, and yeast; let it bloom for about 5 minutes.
  2. Add maple syrup, melted butter, egg, and vanilla to the yeast mixture and whisk to combine.
  3. Using a stand mixer, gradually add flour and salt to the wet ingredients until a shaggy dough forms, then knead until smooth and elastic.
  4. Transfer the dough to an oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1-1.5 hours.
  5. Prepare the filling by mixing softened butter, maple sugar, brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a small bowl.
  6. Roll the risen dough into a rectangle and spread the filling over it, then roll it into a tight log.
  7. Slice the log into 1-inch rolls and place them in a buttered baking dish.
  8. Cover the rolls and let them rise again for about 30 minutes, or refrigerate overnight.
  9. Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Make the frosting by beating cream cheese and butter, then gradually add powdered sugar, maple syrup, and vanilla until fluffy.
  11. Allow the rolls to cool for 10 minutes before frosting them.
