Ingredients

The batter

  • ½ cup salted butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup buttermilk or sour cream
  • 2 cups mashed ripe bananas (about 4 medium bananas)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup natural, unsweetened cocoa powder

The topping

  • ½ to ¾ cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter, sugar, egg, vanilla, buttermilk (or sour cream), and mashed bananas.
  3. Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, mixing until just combined.
  4. Scoop half of the batter into another bowl and mix in the cocoa powder.
  5. Spread the chocolate batter in the prepared pan.
  6. Dollop the banana batter over the chocolate layer and spread it evenly.
  7. Sprinkle chocolate chips on top.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes until puffed and a toothpick inserted comes out with moist crumbs.
