Ingredients

The beans

  • 1 pound dried black beans

The flavorings

  • 8 ounces bacon
  • 1 large white onion, diced
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 leaf bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ancho chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon Mexican oregano

The broth

  • 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 teaspoons sea salt

Instructions

  1. Soak and rinse the black beans, then drain and place them in the slow cooker.
  2. Add bacon, onion, garlic powder, bay leaf, cumin, chili powder, oregano, and broth to the slow cooker.
  3. Cook on low for 6 to 8 hours or on high for 3 to 4 hours, adding salt in the last 30 minutes.
  4. Check the beans periodically and add more liquid if needed.
