Homemade Pita Bread

Ingredients

  • 1 ⅛ cup warm water
  • 1 ½ tsp yeast
  • 1 ½ tsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • ½ cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a small bowl and let sit until foamy.
  2. Add olive oil to the yeast mixture.
  3. In a large bowl, mix 1 cup of flour and salt, then add the yeast mixture and stir.
  4. Continue adding flour until a loose ball forms that can't be stirred with a spoon.
  5. Knead the dough on a floured surface, adding more flour until it is soft and pliable.
  6. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for one hour or until doubled in size.
  7. Punch down the dough, stretch it into a log, and cut it into 8 equal pieces.
  8. Shape each piece into a ball and roll it out into a 6-inch circle.
  9. Preheat the oven to 500°F and let the dough circles rest.
  10. Bake the dough circles on a wire rack in the oven until they puff up, then remove and cover with a damp cloth.
