Flaky Buttermilk Biscuits

Instructions
- Preheat the oven or grill to 450°F.
- Combine all dry ingredients in a large bowl.
- Freeze the butter for at least 10 minutes, then grate it into the dry mixture.
- Slowly add the buttermilk while mixing until the dough forms.
- Lightly flour the surface for rolling out the dough.
- Mist the dough with buttermilk as you roll it out into a rectangle.
- Fold the dough over itself, dusting with flour to prevent sticking, and repeat this process two more times.
- Roll out the dough to a 1-inch thickness and cut into desired shapes.
- Place the biscuits in a greased cast iron skillet so they are touching.
- Beat the egg with water and baste the tops of the biscuits, adding coarse salt if desired.
- Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
