Slow Cooker Apple Cider

Ingredients

The cider base

  • 9 medium apples, assorted types
  • 1 whole orange
  • 3 sticks cinnamon
  • 1 whole nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons whole cloves
  • ½ teaspoon whole allspice (optional)
  • 12–16 cups water

The sweetener

  • ⅓ – ⅔ cup brown sugar (or desired sweetener)

Instructions

  1. Wash and quarter the apples and orange, leaving peels, seeds, and stems intact.
  2. Place the fruit in the slow cooker and add cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice.
  3. Fill the slow cooker with water until nearly full, leaving about ½ inch of space at the top.
  4. Cook on high for 3-4 hours or on low for 6-8 hours.
  5. About an hour before cooking is complete, mash the softened fruit to release more juice.
  6. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer or cheese cloth into a clean pitcher or pot.
  7. Stir in the desired amount of sweetener until dissolved.
  8. Serve hot or refrigerate for up to 5 days, reheating before serving.
