Ingredients

The cookie dough

  • 1 ¼ cups salted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • cup unsweetened or Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup sour cream or plain yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups semisweet or bittersweet chocolate chips

For rolling

  • cup cocoa powder
  • cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Cream together the butter and powdered sugar until well combined.
  3. Sift in the cocoa powder and salt, then mix until combined.
  4. Beat in the sour cream and vanilla extract until just combined.
  5. Blend in the flour until no streaks remain, then stir in the chocolate chips.
  6. If the dough is too warm, chill it for 30 to 60 minutes.
  7. Shape the dough into 1-inch balls, roll in cocoa powder, and place on the baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 9-10 minutes, ensuring they are just set.
  9. Let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  10. Once cooled, roll in powdered sugar until coated.
