Ingredients

The apples

  • 4 large baking apples (like Granny Smith)

The filling

  • ¼ cup salted butter, softened
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • a pinch kosher salt
  • ¼ cup chopped pecans

For baking

  • as needed water to cover the bottom of the pan

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  2. Core the apples, leaving the bottoms intact, and place them in an 8x8 inch baking dish.
  3. In a small bowl, combine softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, salt, and chopped pecans.
  4. Stuff the butter mixture into the cored apples.
  5. Cover the bottom of the baking dish with water.
  6. Bake for 45-60 minutes until the apples are soft and the filling is caramelized.
  7. Serve immediately, optionally with ice cream or cream/milk.
