Ingredients

The filling

  • 3 Tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • ¼ cup packed light or dark brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ cup old-fashioned whole rolled oats
  • 2 Tablespoons raisins, dried cranberries, or chopped nuts (optional)

The apples

  • 4 large apples

For baking

  • ¾ cup warm water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (191°C).
  2. Mix the butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and oats until combined. Add any optional ingredients if desired.
  3. Core the apples using a sharp knife and spoon or an apple corer.
  4. Place the cored apples in a baking dish and fill them with the mixture.
  5. Pour warm water around the apples in the baking dish.
  6. Bake for 40-45 minutes until the apples are slightly soft, adjusting time for desired softness.
  7. Remove from the oven and optionally baste the apples with the pan juices.
  8. Serve warm with salted caramel, whipped cream, or ice cream.
