Ingredients

The dough

  • 1 ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup whole-wheat flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 4 tablespoons cold butter
  • ½ cup apple butter
  • ½ cup cold buttermilk
  • 1 large egg

The flavorings

  • ¾ cup shredded reduced fat cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine the all-purpose flour, whole-wheat flour, baking powder, cream of tartar, and salt in a mixing bowl.
  3. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles peas.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix the apple butter, buttermilk, and egg together.
  5. Add the wet mixture to the flour mixture and stir until just combined.
  6. Fold in the cheddar cheese and dill.
  7. Dump the dough onto a floured surface and knead it gently about 10 times.
  8. Roll or pat the dough into a 1-inch thick rectangle and cut into 2-inch biscuits.
  9. Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 12-14 minutes until golden.
  10. Serve warm with additional apple butter.
