The Frosting

Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare two 9-inch round baking pans with non-stick spray and flour.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spices.
- In a mixer, combine brown sugar, vegetable oil, and applesauce until well mixed, then add eggs and vanilla.
- Gradually mix in half of the dry ingredients, then add buttermilk, and finally the remaining dry ingredients.
- Divide the batter between the prepared pans and bake for 28 to 32 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 5 to 10 minutes, then invert onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the frosting, cream together the butter and cream cheese, then mix in powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.
- Once the cakes are cool, frost with cream cheese frosting and sprinkle pecans on the edges if desired.
