Ingredients

The Cake

  • 1 1/4 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice

The Frosting

  • 1/2 cup salted butter
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • heavy cream to taste for consistency

Instructions

  1. 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  2. 2. In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter, then add chopped apples, brown sugar, and pumpkin pie spice. Sauté until softened.
  3. 3. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, pumpkin pie spice, and salt.
  4. 4. In a large bowl, beat together butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time.
  5. 5. Gradually mix in the flour mixture, alternating with buttermilk and vanilla.
  6. 6. Fold in the sautéed apple mixture.
  7. 7. Spread the batter in the prepared pan and bake for 35-50 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. 8. For the frosting, brown 1/2 cup of butter in a saucepan, then mix with heavy cream, vanilla, and powdered sugar until smooth.
  9. 9. Once the cake is cool, spread the frosting over it and cut into squares.
