Homemade Sourdough Croutons

Ingredients

The croutons

  • 4 cups sourdough bread, cut or torn into 1-inch cubes
  • 2–3 tablespoons olive oil
  • generous pinch salt
  • generous pinch black pepper

Optional additions

  • 1 clove garlic, finely minced
  • ½ teaspoon granulated garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, sage or thyme
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • to taste parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sourdough bread cubes with enough olive oil to lightly coat them.
  3. Sprinkle with a generous pinch of salt, pepper, and any optional additions. Toss well and adjust seasoning to taste.
  4. Spread the mixture in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Bake for 10-12 minutes, stir, and continue baking until golden brown, another 3-5 minutes.
  6. Let the croutons cool completely before storing them in a sealed container for up to 2 weeks.
