Ingredients

The filling

  • 4 large apples, peeled and chopped into ½ inch chunks

The topping

  • cup old fashioned oats
  • cup whole wheat flour (or all purpose)
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • cup pecans or walnuts, finely chopped
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp fine sea salt
  • 4 tbsp cold unsalted butter, chopped into small pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease an 8x8 inch baking dish.
  2. Make the filling by placing the chopped apples in a bowl and sprinkling with flour, then adding brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. Toss to combine and transfer to the baking dish.
  3. For the topping, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, nuts, cinnamon, and salt in the same bowl. Whisk to combine.
  4. Add the cubed butter to the topping mixture and use your hands to mix until a uniform dough forms.
  5. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
  6. Bake for 50-60 minutes until the apples are tender. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
