Ingredients

The batter

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup corn starch
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • cup vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg
  • ¾ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup chocolate chips

Optional toppings

  • to taste melted butter
  • to taste syrup

Instructions

  1. Whisk together the dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Make a well in the dry ingredients and add the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  3. Allow the batter to rest for 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat the oven to 200°F and set a baking sheet with a cooling rack inside.
  5. Fold in the chocolate chips after the batter has rested.
  6. Preheat the waffle iron and cook the batter according to the iron's instructions, about 4 to 6 minutes per waffle.
  7. Transfer cooked waffles to the warm oven while cooking the rest of the batter.
  8. Serve topped with melted butter and syrup if desired.
