Ingredients

The bars

  • 1 batch homemade cherry pie filling (about 2 cups)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick), softened to room temperature
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 ¾ cups whole wheat pastry flour or substitute all purpose flour
  • cup sliced almonds

The glaze

  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon pure almond extract
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare an 8x8-inch baking pan.
  2. In a mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar until creamy.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  4. Combine baking powder and salt, then gradually add the flour while mixing.
  5. Reserve ½ cup of the dough for topping and spread the rest in the prepared pan.
  6. Mix sliced almonds into the reserved dough and set aside.
  7. Spread the cherry pie filling over the dough, then drop spoonfuls of the reserved dough on top.
  8. Bake for 50 to 55 minutes until golden and set, then cool completely.
  9. Prepare the glaze and drizzle it over the cooled bars before slicing and serving.
