Ingredients

The hot chocolate

  • 1 full-size candy cane
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 cup milk
  • a pinch salt

Optional toppings

  • whipped cream
  • mini marshmallows

Instructions

  1. Crush the candy cane in a zip-top bag using a rolling pin or meat mallet.
  2. In a small saucepan, combine the crushed candy cane, sugar, cocoa powder, and water over medium heat, stirring until smooth and the candy has mostly dissolved.
  3. Add the milk and salt, stirring until heated to your desired temperature and the candy cane is fully dissolved.
  4. Pour into a mug and top with whipped cream or marshmallows if desired.
