bourbon or rum (optional)
Instructions
- Add the apples and quartered oranges to a large pot, along with the spices and water.
- Bring the mixture to a rapid simmer, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 2 hours.
- Remove the unpeeled orange slices and mash the remaining ingredients in the pot.
- Simmer uncovered for an additional hour.
- Strain the cider through a fine mesh strainer, pressing the solids to extract as much liquid as possible.
- Return the strained cider to the pot, add the maple syrup or brown sugar and vanilla, and stir to combine.
- Serve warm or chilled, garnished with apple slices and cinnamon sticks.
