Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • 3 cups water
  • 1 cup steel-cut oats
  • ΒΌ teaspoon sea salt
  • to taste cinnamon, nutmeg, and/or cardamom (optional)
  • to taste honey or maple syrup (optional)

Topping Variations

  • 1 thinly sliced apple
  • to taste frozen tart cherries (thawed)
  • to taste chopped almonds
  • to taste frozen blueberries (thawed)
  • to taste orange zest
  • to taste Greek yogurt
  • to taste chia seeds
  • to taste coconut flakes

Instructions

  1. Bring water to a boil in a medium pot.
  2. Add the oats and salt, then reduce the heat to medium-low.
  3. Cook while stirring occasionally for 15 to 20 minutes until thickened.
  4. Stir in optional spices if desired.
  5. Remove from heat and let stand for two minutes.
  6. Serve hot with optional honey or maple syrup.
  7. For the Apple & Tart Cherry variation, top with sliced apples, tart cherries, and almonds.
  8. For the Blueberry & Coconut variation, top with blueberries, orange zest, Greek yogurt, chia seeds, and coconut flakes.
