Southern Green Beans

thick-cut bacon

Instructions
- Cook diced bacon in a pot over medium heat until crispy, about 6 minutes.
- If using ham, brown it in bacon grease or oil; if using smoked sausage, brown it as well.
- Wash and trim the green beans, chop the onions, and slice the garlic while the bacon cooks.
- Add the onions and bay leaf to the pot and sauté until softened, then add garlic and green beans.
- Cover the beans with broth and add vinegar and sweetener if desired.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for 40 minutes to 1 ½ hours until tender.
