Ingredients

The French Toast

  • 1 loaf country sourdough bread, sliced into 3/4" slices
  • 4 units eggs
  • 1 cup half and half
  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon cardamom
  • ¼ teaspoon allspice
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons butter

Berry Compote

  • 3 cups berries
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 3 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • a tiny pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Slice the bread into 3/4 inch thick slices.
  2. Whisk together eggs, half and half, maple syrup, orange zest, spices, and salt until smooth and pour into a shallow container.
  3. Dip the bread slices into the custard for 2-5 minutes on each side and let excess drip off.
  4. Heat a skillet to medium-low, add butter, and cook the soaked bread slices for about 3 minutes per side until golden.
  5. For the berry compote, simmer maple syrup and 1 cup of berries, then mix orange juice with cornstarch and add to the mixture until thick.
  6. Stir in the remaining berries and serve the French toast topped with the berry compote.
