The glaze

Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F.
- In a medium bowl, combine the buttermilk, apple sauce, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and egg.
- Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flours, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Cut in the chilled butter until the mixture resembles coarse meal.
- Fold in the diced apples.
- Add the buttermilk mixture and stir until just moist.
- Place the dough on a floured surface and knead lightly four times.
- Form the dough into a 9-inch circle on the baking sheet, about ¾ inch thick.
- Cut the dough into 12 wedges all the way through.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes until golden.
- Let cool on a rack for about 10 minutes.
- To make the glaze, mix the powdered sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 2 tbsp of milk, adding more if necessary for consistency.
- Drizzle the glaze over the scones or dip the tops into the glaze.
