Ingredients

Doughnut Ingredients

  • ½ cup white whole wheat flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup skim milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 ½ teaspoons canola oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened applesauce

Frosting Ingredients

  • ¼ cup chocolate chips
  • ½ teaspoon canola oil
  • 1 ½ teaspoons agave nectar or corn syrup
  • 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon rainbow sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F and lightly mist a doughnut pan with cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder, and salt until combined.
  3. Add the egg, milk, vanilla, oil, and applesauce to the dry ingredients and stir until thoroughly mixed.
  4. Distribute the batter evenly into the doughnut pan using a spoon or piping bag.
  5. Bake for 7-8 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean, then cool completely.
  6. For the frosting, combine chocolate chips, canola oil, and agave nectar in a bowl and microwave in 20-second intervals until melted.
  7. Stir in vanilla until smooth and dip the top of each doughnut into the melted chocolate, spreading if necessary.
  8. Before the chocolate sets, sprinkle each doughnut with rainbow sprinkles.
