Ingredients

  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 2 tbsp honey (or maple syrup)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (or melted butter)
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water and honey in a bowl and stir until dissolved. Sprinkle yeast and let sit until foamy.
  2. Add olive oil to the yeast mixture and stir.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together whole wheat flour and salt.
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture to the yeast mixture until a rough dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Shape the dough into a ball, place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled.
  7. Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a loaf.
  8. Place the loaf in a greased pan, cover, and let rise for another 30 to 45 minutes.
  9. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for 35 to 40 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
