Ingredients

The apples

  • 3 pounds apples

The liquids

  • ½ cup apple juice or cider
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

The spices and sweeteners

  • 1 stick cinnamon (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons honey (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (ground)

Instructions

  1. Combine the apples, apple juice or cider, lemon juice, and cinnamon stick in a large pot.
  2. Cover and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes until the apples are tender.
  3. Remove the cinnamon stick and transfer the mixture to a food processor or mash by hand.
  4. Add honey and nutmeg if using, then puree to your desired consistency.
  5. Serve immediately, refrigerate, or freeze the leftovers.
