Ingredients

Buttercream Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 4–5 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • ¼ cup heavy cream, half-and-half, or whole milk, at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • to taste salt

Decorating Tools

  • 1 each piping bag (disposable or reusable)
  • 1 each Wilton 1M (large open star)
  • 1 each Wilton 8B (another large open star)
  • 1 each Ateco 849 (XL, wide closed star)
  • 1 each Wilton 12 (small, narrow round)
  • 1 each Ateco 808 (large, wide round)

Instructions

  1. Beat the softened butter on medium speed until creamy.
  2. Add 4 and ½ cups of confectioners’ sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract, then beat on low speed for 30 seconds.
  3. Increase to medium-high speed and beat for 2 minutes, then taste and add salt if necessary.
  4. Adjust the consistency by adding more confectioners’ sugar if too thin, or more heavy cream if too thick.
  5. Select a piping tip and prepare your cake or cupcakes.
  6. Fill the piping bag using a cup to avoid mess.
  7. Use the selected piping tip to create decorations on your baked goods.
